TRAVEL ITINERARY

Day 1: Indianapolis / Tucson, AZ
We fly to Tucson. A casual dinner is included as we get acquainted and learn about our upcoming adventure. Sheraton Four Points — Tucson, AZ (D)

Day 2: Tucson / Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum / Santa Rita Mountains / Madera Canyon / Rio Rico, AZ
Tucson sits amid what many consider to be the most beautiful desert in the world – the Sonoran. We visit one of the most picturesque and photogenic sites – The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. Here we will visit indoor museum exhibits and outdoor botanic displays. We will share huge enclosures with hummingbirds and other birds of the southwest, up close and personal! Lunch is included at the Museum. We travel to the Santa Rita Mountains and Madera Canyon and visit a couple of rustic mountain lodges whose feeders attract many of the hummingbirds of the mid-elevation mountain canyons. We will spend the evening in scenic Rio Rico at the exquisite Esplendor Resort. The hotel courtyard offers many opportunities to see more hummingbirds and other feathered residents. Esplendor Resort — Rio Rico, AZ (B, L)

Day 3: Rio Rico / Sierra Vista, AZ / Patagonia / Patagonia-Sonoita Creek Preserve
For the next two days we will be based in Sierra Vista, which sits at the east front of the Huachuca Mountains. We will make our way south to Patagonia where the famous Paton residence is located. Although the Patons no longer live there, local birders maintain the grounds and feeders of this home where everything was done on behalf of the birds. It has long been regarded as the best place to see Violet-crowned Hummingbirds in southeast Arizona. We visit the Patagonia-Sonoita Creek Preserve, a Nature Conservancy property where we will stroll along a trail that winds its way through a towering cottonwood gallery and mesquite thickets. Many riparian and arid lowland birds make their homes in the Preserve. Fairfield Inn & Suites — Sierra Vista, AZ (B, L)

Day 4: Sierra Vista / Huachuca Canyon / Garden Canyon / Beatty Ranch-Miller Canyon
Today we will be joined by renowned expert on hummingbirds, Sheri Williamson, as we explore several of the canyons of the Huachucas, including Garden Canyon, Huachuca Canyon and especially Miller Canyon, site of the Beatty Ranch and home of some of the best “hummingbirding” in southeast Arizona. A highlight of the day will be to watch the banding of hummingbirds with Sheri Williamson and local volunteers. Fairfield Inn & Suites — Sierra Vista, AZ (B, L)

Day 5: Sierra Vista / Kartchner State Park & Caverns / Old Town Tucson
We will tour Kartchner Caverns and Kartchner State Park before returning to Tucson. We have an opportunity to explore Old Town Tucson for a little retail therapy to pick up those last minute gifts for the folks back home. We’ll enjoy a farewell dinner at one of Tucson’s most popular local restaurants! Sheraton Four Points — Tucson, AZ (B, D)

Day 6: Tucson, AZ / Indianapolis, IN
We transfer to the airport for our flight home. (B)
